A MONMOUTHSHIRE inn has been named Gwent's country pub of the year.

John Davis and Julie Rogers, who bought The Star Inn at Llansoy a year ago, say they are overwhelmed and surprised to win the accolade from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) after what they describe as a hectic but rewarding year.

Mr Davis, 42, a former Wetherspoons manager, and his partner Julie,32, a part-time manager at a children's nursery in Raglan, have strived to make their pub the hub of the community by holding beer tastings, festivals and community events.

Ms Rogers, is well- known as one of the fundraising duo the bra girls who completed ten marathons in 12 months to raise more than £20,000 for breast cancer charity. The other half of the duo Julia Rennie,40, is Mr Davis' sister.

Despite an exhausting year, the couple are relishing life at the pub with their two small children.

"I worked in several Wetherspoons pubs for 14 years but when the chance to buy The Star Inn came up we jumped at the chance and upped sticks from Chepstow," explained Mr Davis.

"We've given the pub a makeover, created a family-friendly area and regularly hold theme nights and beer tastings and are keen to promote local ale's, We are working with the community and have a great team of staff," he said.

The award was presented to the couple by the Gwent branch of CAMRA this week.
