A GWENT student has received an award for her success and commitment to learning.

Mandy Phillips was named as Coleg Gwent Universities Heads of the Valleys Institute learner of the year for 2012.

The mature student is taking a foundation degree in community health and wellbeing at the college’s Pontypool campus.

Tutors said Ms Phillips’ work was consistent and had received positive feedback form her work placements.

The Universities Head of the Valleys Institute was launched in 2010 and is partnership between the University of Wales, Newport, and the University of Glamorgan.

Its director Helen Marshall said: “UHOVI is making a real difference to businesses in regenerating the valleys. Behind the statistics are stories of individual success with over 1,500 students whose lives are being changed by their UHOVI study.”
