WEWILL be noting with interest the results of a trial launched today in Gwent aimed at giving people greater protection from abusive relationships.

Clare’s Lawwas set up after the death of Manchester woman Clare Wood who was killed by her former partner, who had previous convictions for harassment, threats to kill and kidnap.

The trial scheme, run in Manchester, Gwent, Nottinghamshire and Wiltshire, will give women and men the chance to find out if their partner has a history of domestic violence.

Police will take immediate action when they believe someone is at risk of harm, and counselling and alternative accommodation can be offered in partnership with social services and Women’s Aid.

The hope is people will be able to escape a potentially abusive relationship because of the support they are given.

We fully support this law and we hope it will save many from abuse. It is only right that people are able to get information on partners they suspect may have carried out domestic abuse.

Some may say this is yet another breach of human rights. We say that is nonsense.

The innocent have nothing to fear.

Just like those schemes in place to alert people if a paedophile lives nearby, finding out a newpartner is abusive and having the support to come out of that relationship, can only be a good thing.
