HOMEOWNERS are being urged to take extra care when answering the front door to prevent themselves from falling foul of bogus callers and distraction burglary.

The Consumer Council for Water has issued the warning against criminals who claim to be from the ‘water board’ or another recognised organisation, to gain entry to a home and commit a robbery.

The Consumer Council for Water have released some top tips to help avoid falling foul of bogus callers.

They include keeping your door on the chain to see who is calling before opening it, always ask for the callers ID and check the person is genuine by finding the number of the company yourself and verifying they are who they say they are before letting them in.

They also remind residents that refusing entry is OK, as if it is a legitimate visit it can be rescheduled.

If the visitor insists they need access immediately, or before you carry out the necessary checks, then call 999.
