Engineering students at Coleg Gwent were recently given the opportunity to try out the latest developments in the fabrication and welding industry during a technology day.
Visitors from the industry attended the event at the City of Newport Campus where they talked with students and demonstrated how to use the latest products.
German company EWM AG brought their new advanced welding machinery which uses fully coordinated systems in which all components are systematically geared towards delivering consistently high welding quality, conserving resources and reducing the workload.
Sales engineer for EWM Martin Jenkins said: “These students are the engineers of the future and want to be ahead in the industry. Being at the forefront of the welding industry EWM AG invests 10 per cent of our annual turnover in research and development which can be seen in our advanced equipment the students have had a chance to try during the technology day.”
Acting head of school of engineering Steve Lewis said: “We were keen to promote the latest technology here at Coleg Gwent. In the world of Engineering there is a continuing challenge to develop new solutions to meet the needs of local infrastructure and manufacture.
"We like to work with local employers and suppliers such as EWM as there is always the opportunity to learn more about the future development of the equipment used in the many techniques and specialist processes.
“The skills and qualifications gained in this country are highly regarded worldwide, so there are many career opportunities open to our learners and we are keen to give them every opportunity to get ahead,” said Steve.
