A Cwmbran-based solicitors firm is celebrating after a young employee clinched a prestigious legal industry award.

Lucy Itani, of Rubin Lewis O’Brien, has won the CILEx Student of the Year award after demonstrating her huge commitment to her examinations as well as her role as a paralegal in the family department.

Lucy, 26, said: “I am thrilled to have won this award and very pleased that my efforts have been recognised.

"Last year was quite a challenge for me being a new mum but I was determined to continue with my studies and return to work following maternity leave. So to be recognised in this way is somewhat overwhelming but equally fantastic. I am very grateful for the support I have received from my husband, family and Rubin Lewis O’Brien.”

Lucy, who has been at the firm for six years, has been studying with the CILEx law school for two years via a long-distance learning course and even took five of her exams while on maternity leave.

CILEx is an alternative route to becoming a legal executive and is equivalent to a law degree.

The award win came about after being nominated by her lecturers and Lucy will be officially presented the award at a ceremony on March 2.

Val Henley, partner and head of family department at Rubin Lewis O’Brien, said: “We are very proud of Lucy’s achievement. Her determination shows through in both her role as Paralegal and how she has continued with her studies and passed her exams.

“I am not at all surprised that her motivation and attitude shone through to the judges and resulted in this well-deserved award. Congratulations Lucy, we look forward to supporting your career in the future.”
