THERE have been lots of events around Newport for Carers Week 2017, which celebrates the vital contribution carers make to our families, communities and wider society.

With people living longer than ever before, all of us at some point in our lives are either going to be caring for someone or need the help of a carer.

Having the best support in place makes a big difference to those with caring responsibilities. As part of Carers week, it was lovely to visit the Sycamore Ward at St Woolos Hospital.

The staff on the Dementia Ward organised pamper sessions and afternoon tea for patients and their relatives. It was a kind and welcome way to show appreciation to those who care.

  • This week the Welsh Government announced plans to curb the use of Zero Hour contracts and protect time in the social care sector.

Under proposals put to consultation, employers would need to offer workers in the domiciliary care sector on Zero Hours contracts the choice of moving to a minimum hours contract after three months of continued employment if there is ongoing demand for the work.

Crucially, employees would have the choice. The consultation, which closes on the 7th August 2017, is available on www.consultations.gov.wales or contact my office on 01633 376627 if you would like a copy.

  • It has been great to see some much needed certainty about the future of top class sport at Rodney Parade. The success of Newport RFC winning the Tier 2 Final, the excitement of Newport County AFC’s ‘great escape’ and the new dawn for the Dragons has to be built on for next season. Our Clubs play an instrumental role in our community and together we feel the highs and lows. Let's all get behind them for the season ahead.
  • After 4 elections in the last 13 months, many would be forgiven for thinking the General Election last week was unwelcome. However, it has been wonderful to see so many people - young people in particular - who were galvanised about politics and eager to use their vote. I've never seen so many new people keen to be involved in politics. That can only be positive for democracy. Huge congratulations to both Paul Flynn and Jessica Morden who have been re-elected to represent Newport in the UK Parliament.
