THE former Newport council run Maindee Library is now operated by volunteers and will be operating four days a week.

It is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm. There is a selection of books and light refreshments are available.

The volunteers hope to have IT equipment soon.

The library will re-open at 10am on Wednesday, 6 January.

Over the festive period, the Christmas tree outside the library was set on fire.

Someone rang 999 and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police attended.

They discovered one branch was scorched but was no longer alight.

In August last year, the Argus reported that the library was to be save and become a community centre after Newport City Council agreed to let a group of volunteers take it over.

Regeneration charity Maindee Unlimited take over the library as a community asset.

The library was forced to close after Newport City Council announced they were making city-wide cuts to library provision and could no longer run it.
