A NEWPORT woman will mark the first year anniversary of her father’s death by taking part in a midnight charity walk in aid of the hospice which cared for him.

Soraya Yafin, 25, of Alway Crescent, and her mum Julie, will join hundreds of other women on June 26 when they complete the 10 mile Midnight Walk in aid of St Anne’s Hospice.

Ms Yafin’s dad, Mohamed, died of lung cancer at the age of 62 on June 26 last year and spent the last six weeks before his death being cared for by the hospice.

Mr Yafin was diagnosed with the illness in April 2007 and was told in January 2008 that the cancer had spread to his liver.

Ms Yafin said she and her mum will do anything they can to raise money for the hospice and said it is a great way of marking the anniversary of her dad’s death.

She said: “They did such a wonderful job and were really supportive to my family."

The in-patient hospice provides specialist palliative care for the people of Gwent.

It was opened in 1994 in the grounds of St Joseph’s Hospital in Malpas and has to find around £1 million worth of funding each year to keep running.

The hospice launched the walk yesterday at the Newport Stadium, the venue where the walk will start and finish and it has the backing of the Safety Advisory Group and Gwent Police.

Ms Yafin said she is hoping to raise about £500 from the walk.

She said: “I want to get as many women to do it with me as possible."
