AN ELITE Welsh motorcycle racer is backing a proposed £250 million motorsport complex in Ebbw Vale.
Chaz Davies, 25, 2011 World Supersport champion, says the Circuit of Wales planned for Rassau would not only bring a unique racing circuit to South Wales, but the creation of 9,000 jobs would have a lasting effect on the area.
Mr Davies joined the BMW Motorrad team for the 2013 Superbike World Championship, and at the start of September took a debut World Superbike race win at the Nürburgring, Germany.
If the Circuit of Wales is given the go-ahead by Blaenau Gwent Council he could soon be taking centre stage on home soil.
The 2011 Wales Sports Personality of the Year said: “The thought of competing at the Circuit of Wales is incredibly exciting. For me to race – and hopefully win – at what would essentially be my local track would be a dream.”
The planned development would have a 3.5-mile main race track, an international kart track and motocross tracks, a technology park to progress motorsport equipment, and a race academy to develop young élite riders and drivers. A planning application is expected this month, and detailed designs, the selection of the preferred development partner, industrial partnerships and key events are set to be announced later this year.
If passed and built, the 830- acre site could be open in 2015 in the hope of attracting major events, including MotoGP, World Superbikes, World Motocross and Touring Car.
