MAY I take issue with the clip about the demise of Echo, Stow Hill, in February 4 Grassroots.
A certain splinter group by that name is closing down, but Everyone Counts Here On Stow Hill (ECHO) was the name of the SH Community-First (C1) organisation agreed in 2002 by a meeting attended by many residents following a competition to suggest a name and logo by the pupils of St Woolos Primary School. I have the minutes of the meeting, which also confirm that the group was successful in obtaining a funding bid from the Assembly to set up office, staff and the ECHO community newsletter. It would be wrong to say any individual started the organisation as this was truly a collective effort by residents, school, council and GAVO. The Stow Hill C1 organisation continues successfully at the Share Centre with local activities, and I understand it’s joining other C1 organisations in a central cluster, which has just received a large grant from the WG. In doing so, they have proved that 11 years on, the C1 vision is thriving and will hopefully continue to deliver for the local communities.
