I WAS pleased to see the march by the Chartist Mural campaigners. I still do not understand why the mural was destroyed, and the timing of its destruction.
Ten years ago, everyone knew it was on panels and could be moved in tact. At that time, there were regular meetings in the Catholic church on Stow Hill to decide where to move it to.
The organisers of the march should seek legal advice about whether it would be possible to take out a private prosecution against Newport City Council for the destruction of public property, namely the mural and the clock which, we were assured, was in safe storage while it was, in fact, in pieces at Newport docks.
There is an empty shop, formerly Internacionale, adjoining the entrance to the Westgate Hotel.
This could be leased, a replica of the mural painted on one of the internal walls and the Chartist exhibition moved into this building from the museum.
