NORMAN Plaisted’s recent letter about our politicians was spot on. If a pay body had awarded a huge pay rise to road cleaners, dinner ladies and nurses it would be told “Thanks but no thanks – the country’s bankrupt” – but our various layers of politicians are not subject to such petty details.
The Lords is chock a block with freeloaders, the Commons should reflect the extra layers we have had to pay for since 1997 and should be reduced to 400 MPs and the Assembly and Scottish Parliament should either be cut back or even better, manned on a part-time basis by Westminster MPs who, as Betty Boothroyd said, spend too much time swanning around Westminster “up to no good”.
So come on Mr Cameron, let’s make these changes and then the public might be happy to pay a modest increase to your colleagues.
