JAN Preece (Argus 26th August) adds to the stock of letters based on false assumptions on immigration.
He claims “it is easy is migrate en masse”. Perhaps he would like to explain this to any surviving relatives of the 50 migrants who, on the same day as his letter was published, were found dead in a ship in the Mediterranean.
He argues that the UN should “enter their country and remove the danger” forgetting that foreign intervention in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya has greatly increased the level of migration.
He says that refugees should be “looking to rebuild their lives in their own country”, ignoring the fact that 95 per cent of refugees from Syria are living in neighbouring countries like Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, only too desperate to return home.
He implies that all those who reach Europe are heading for London, yet Britain has only 1 per cent of those coming from Syria (compared to 40 per cent in Germany and 20 per cent in Sweden).
If we are to find solutions to the challenges posed by the present situation we need to start with rational analysis.
