THE point raised by Sarah Symonds regarding illegal parking is valid and one that goes far beyond Newport High Street.
Since the demise of the much-maligned traffic wardens as a result of cuts, Newport and Caerphilly authorities have turned their back on this problem.
The cites of Cardiff and Swansea have followed the example set by Aberystwyth in employing ‘traffic officers” who undertake the previous traffic wardens’ role.
Gwent local authorities appear quite prepared to lay down various parking restrictions, with little if any thought being given to parking effects generated as a result by the granting of fast food and convenience store outlets and provide no support in enforcement.
Effects such as a total
disregard for zebra crossing zig zags, buses not able to pull into bays therefore creating a risk for passengers getting on and off buses also costly and hazardous traffic hold ups.
All too quick to abdicate any responsibility, where now the partnership principle and practice?
In these days of austerity – wake up local authorities there is income to be gained here.
The only people who will complain are those of the ill that complain about speed cameras, those who break the law.
