THANK you very much for your centre pages reminder of the sacrifice and unbelievable condition that the men and boys of Newport, Monmouthshire and surrounding Valleys endured in the cause of freedom at the Somme.
There are no survivors to say “thank you for remembering us and our pals that did not come home,” except for the descendants of these brave men and women, of which, I am one. Towns and villages across Wales have, in their own ways, remembered the fallen of their communities, that is except this so-called city of Newport: Shame on you.
We will remember, even if the city fathers don’t.
