I WAS dismayed to read in Monday’s paper of the suggestion of holding an “Africa Day” at Rodney Parade, with culture “from this country”.

The idea is seemingly to educate the public! However, the organisers have clearly not realised that Africa is in fact a continent, with some 54 independent recognised countries, in addition to those not recognized as for a number of reasons.

Each of these countries has its own languages, culture and religion, although some may be shared with those close to the border, especially where the boundaries were drawn by colonial powers rather than on tribal lines.

Surely part of educating the public should be to let them know about the diverse aspects of the continent of Africa, rather than pretending they all share one language and culture!
