TUESDAY’S ‘Behind the Headlines’ re-told the fascinating story of the discovery of Newport’s magnificent medieval ship, the remarkable campaign to ensure it was saved and the painstaking restoration work.
As the Argus leading article says, what is yet to be resolved is where the ship will be finally re-assembled and displayed, as yet another part of Newport’s proud heritage, to add to Roman Caerleon, the Norman Castle, St Woolos Cathedral, Tredegar House, Fourteen Locks and the Transporter Bridge.
I know the council has commissioned a study, but I wonder if anyone has thought of the vacant former Sainsbury store at Shaftesbury? It is there waiting and could be adapted to serve as the new Newport Museum, based on the ship. The site is large enough to accommodate some of the planned housing. It is near the river and not far from where it was discovered. Obviously, negotiation with the site owners would be required but I would have thought it was worth consideration.
