THE opening of 24 new affordable homes in Ringland has been pushed back until the summer.

The Mountbatten Close development – between Milton Primary School and the A48 Southern Distributor Road – forms part of the Newport City Homes Ringland regeneration plan.

The development saw the demolition of a four-storey 1960s apartment block, and replacing it with a block of 12 affordable flats and 12 semi-detached affordable homes.

It will also feature 37 parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points.

Newport City Homes told the Argus in August the first of the two- and three-bedroom homes would be completed by Christmas, however this has now been pushed back.

Rachel George, head of regeneration at Newport City Homes said: “Due to supply chain issues and the weather over the last month, there have been slight delays with finishing the homes on Mountbatten Close.

“We hope these will now be completed by summer 2023, with the apartments following shortly after.”

The first stage of the Ringland regeneration project – the 56-home £7.5 million Cot Farm development – was completed in June 2021.

The former Friendship Inn pub was demolished in the summer ahead of the upcoming work at Ringland Circle – which will see the current shopping centre demolished and relocated, and 158 new homes built.

Ms George said work was “progressing well” ahead of construction work starting in spring 2023.
