Young people from six of Newport’s Secondary Schools, including St Julian’s, put on a brilliant performance at the Mayor’s Gala Concert at the River Front last Tuesday.

The Newport City Big Band, under the direction of Paul Hornsby, delighted the audience in the foyer before the performance.

Beechwood’s very own Vanessa Clarke School of Dance opened and closed the first half and then provided a lively and colourful finale with Mama Mia.

St Julian’s School made two excellent contributions.

The first was a group with a drummer and two guitarists - James Aston, Daniel Basham and Robyn Meredith and two vocalists Emily Brussalis-Dare and Abbie Thomas.

There were then selected scenes from Willy Russell’s Stags and Hens with Abbie Thomas, Gemma Quinney, Emillie Willavise, Stacey Smith, Emily Stannaway, Robert McKinty, Oliver Hawken, Matthew Neale, Lemarl Freckleton, Joshua Ford, Jack Henry and Barham Hammad.

There was enthusiastic support for our talented youngsters and proceeds benefited the Mayor’s charities - St David’s Foundation and Newport MENCAP.

His Right Worshipful the Mayor of Newport, Councillor Glyn Jarvis warmly thanked all concerned.
