THE Mayor of Newport, Councillor John Guy, was made to squirm on Saturday night as a panto dame held him to account over free parking.

Lee Mengo, a seasoned dame, is starring in Robin Hood at the Riverfront in Newport and was going through his early routine of pointing out notable figures in the crowd.

He spotted Cllr Guy and introduced him to the crowd, before telling him he needed to have a word with him about free parking.

The quip alluded to our campaign to "Keep City Parking Free" which is urging the council to reverse its decision to scrap free parking in council owned car parks for the first two hours of shoppers stays'.

The gag brought a laugh from the audience before they broke out into a full round of a applause.

You can follow all the news from tonight’s full council meeting at the Civic Centre which will see a motion go before council backing our campaign.
