LAST week we featured a picture of George Street Bridge, Newport.

The ‘then’ picture was located in Around Newport by Louise Tolcher. The picture is from 1965 and presents a view of the bridge from Corporation Road showing the expanse of the curved structure.

George Street Bridge opened on April 9, 1964, and two years later its connecting roads were completed.

This is Newport’s well used George Street bridge linking east and west Newport and helping to ease the congestion on the old town bridge.

It was built between 1962 and 1964 and was the first cantilever bridge in the UK.

As an apprentice working in the old Newport Power Station I had a grandstand view of the construction.
