LAST week we featured a picture of Backhall Street, Caerleon in 1910.

THE picture is the back of Backhall Street, Caerleon. In that area - the ‘then’ photographer would be standing in an open space in the corner of Backhall Street/Church Street.

Behind the photographer would be the London Inn. Next to the London Inn was the Methodist Church where the Independent Order of Rechabites met - a temperance society.

On the right of the picture is the Lion public house and also on the right hand side was a corner shop. Immediately behind the Red Lion Hotel was Tom Edwards Bakery. Looking down the street, on the right hand side, there is a gas street lamp, which my grandfather, my father and occasionally myself used to maintain.
