LAST week we featured a picture of Carnegie’s Free Library, Rogerstone Place, Rogerstone.
The ‘then’ picture was found in a book called Images of Wales, Rogerstone by Kim Fry.
Now the library is called Rogerstone Library and can be found on Tregwilym Road, Newport.
The library was opened in November 1905 by Lord Tredegar and there was a popular turn out by local residents for the ceremony.
At the time the library was open weekdays from 10am to 10pm and the lending department was open once a week.
In 1991 the library was threatened with closure but a petition was signed by residents and councillors to keep the library open.
At the end of the 1992/1993 financial year refurbishments and repairs were carried out and on May 17, 1993, the Mayor of Newport, Cllr Allan Perry, re-opened the library.
On July 23, 2003 the library became a Grade II listed building.
