LAST week we featured a picture of York Place, Newport from 1915.

DURING this period, an educational institution called Clytha College was located here which was established in 1875.

The college was said to have operated with ‘an efficient staff of resident and non-resident masters.’ Each term the college costs were £2 2s. and it was assured that all students would receive a comprehensive education.

This picture was found in Newport (Gwent) in Old Picture Postcards (Vol 2) courtesy of the author, David Jones.

Reader comments: Todays picture shows York Place looking down from Stow Hill, near the hospital, to Baneswell.

It used to be quite posh in the past but now very much a bed sitter and flats road.
