AUSTRALIA v LIONS (Thirdl Test, tomorrow, KO 11.05)

AUSTRALIAN rugby legend David Campese has accused British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland of “panicking” ahead of tomorrow’s Test series decider with the Wallabies.

Ex-All Blacks hooker Gatland has been hammered by many over his decision to select ten Welshmen in his starting XV and axe Ireland great Brian O’Driscoll.

A World Cup winner with the Wallabies in 1991, Campese joined the critics queuing up to fire shots at the Wales head coach.

“Obviously the changes have occurred because Gatland’s panicked a bit,” Campese said.

“Last week he said, ‘the changes are good, there’s a lot more in the team’ but (that is) a lot of changes – seven changes going into 80 minutes of rugby. The Wallabies have really got the same side – they’ve got a bit of momentum.”

The great wing famously cost Australia the 1989 series against the Lions when his horror pass to full back Greg Martin in the third Test was pounced on by Wales wing Ieuan Evans who scored a match-changing try.

The tourists held on to win that deciding match 19-18 and clinch the series 2-1.

Campese believes the Lions haven’t got the game-breakers to make a difference in Sydney for tomorrow’s third and final Test to emulate the achievements of captain Finlay Calder’s men 24 years ago.

“If you look at the majority of the players, they are Welsh,” he said.

“Obviously they won the Grand Slam (in 2012) so the guys obviously know what they’re doing but I’d still like to know who has the X-factor in this team? Who’s going to do something different?

“The big difference (in the second Test) was the Aussies tried things and that’s how they got the try. The Lions just went out there and said, ‘we’ll defend’.

“I don’t think the Lions made the advantage line once and that’s what you have to do in this game.

“Obviously the changes have occurred because Gat-land’s panicked a bit.

“If you don’t make the advantage line, the defence dominates and that’s where I think the Lions will struggle if they haven’t got something up their sleeve for this Saturday in the third Test.”

Campese also questioned the inclusion of Jamie Roberts and believes the Lions are short of leaders without O’Driscoll after injuries already ruled out captain and openside flanker Sam Warburton and 2009 Lions skipper, Munster second row Paul O’Connell.

“Roberts is in, we don’t know how his hammy (hamstring) is, but O’Driscoll is a great player – take him out and who’s going to be the leaders in the Lions side? There really isn’t anyone anymore.”
