BOXERS on the Warrior Promotions bill at the Newport Centre on Saturday, July 27, will have a thousand extra reasons to impress on the night.

Promotor Mark Prior has decided to reward the best boxer on the night with the Warrior Cup and a cash prize of £1,000.

Prior, general manager Greg Steene and matchmaker Steve Sims will judge who has given the best performance, with Welsh Area secretary Mark Warner also on hand to deliberate.

“We think this is a fantastic incentive for the boxers to want to fight and put on a show to entertain the crowd,” said Steene.

“It should help produce some quality boxing and we’ll be doing this with every show from now on.

“I don’t think this has ever been done before and for small hall shows like these we think it is a very generous prize and one that should make for even more entertainment on the night.”

Newport’s Craig Woodruff is top of the bill on July 27 as he defends his Welsh lightweight title against Merthyr’s Dai Davies.

Woodruff won the belt by beating Tony Pace in Newport in February and the 20-year-old, who trains with Sims at his Alway gym, will be among the favourites to win the Warrior Cup with his crowd-pleasing style.

Also in Welsh title action is St Josephs star Frankie Borg, who faces Gary Cooper for the middleweight title, as well as local favourites Jerome Samuels, Craig Kennedy, Wayne Brooks and Lewis Patterson.
