BUDDING female footballers in Gwent are being urged to show what they can do as the new season gets under way.
Abertillery Football Club has started five teams solely concentrating on girls aged six to 16 and they also aim to start a senior women’s team.
Recruitment officer Stephen Morgan says the club would like to attract more girls to their teams at under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16 levels.
“We would like to recruit more girls to the 60 we already have coming to training,” said Morgan.
“In 12 months we’ve gone from four girls to 60 but we always want more.
“We’re looking for anybody aged six to 16 and any parents who want to help out in coaching, admin, first aid or sponsorship.”
The girls, who are known as the Abertillery Belles on Facebook, recently enjoyed a visit from footballer turned boxer Lauren Price.
The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, who previously played football for Wales, met the girls at a training session.
“The girls were really pleased to meet Lauren and she inspired them to keep enjoying their football.”
Anyone interested in getting involved in girls football at Abertillery is asked to contact Morgan on 07890 655379 or coaches Andrew Veale on 07840 210841 or Ronnie Chase on 07877 770729.
