A DECIDING fighting between duelling British rivals Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew is unlikely ever to materialise, the Argus can reveal.

The hatred between the boxers shows no signs of subsiding with the scores now locked at 1-1, Bellew beating the Cefn Fforest fighter via split decision in Liverpool at cruiserweight last month.

The evened the score in terms of their grudge, Cleverly having bested Bellew in 2011 in defence of his WBO light heavyweight world title.

The pair appeared to agree to a third fight in the ring last month, with Cleverly telling Bellew it was time to come to Cardiff, but the Argus understands the prospect is diminishing all the time.

Cleverly, 26, is unlikely to fight again at cruiserweight having concluded it’s too much of a step up for him and the duo’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, is already making plans for Bellew to challenge for a world title.

He also criticised the battle between the pair in his Daily Mail column.

“I’m currently planning the next move for Tony Bellew after he got his revenge over Nathan Cleverly,” he wrote. “We all expected fireworks and unfortunately the main event just didn’t live up to it.

“But Tony did what he had to do and now has a great future in front of him – I’m in talks with both Marco Huck and Yoan Hernandez about cruiserweight world-title fights with Tony.

“The rest of the division know that he sells. The numbers from the weekend were very good and that makes him commercially attractive to all of them.

“At the moment, it looks like his next fight will be for a world title in the spring. We are already in discussions with Huck, the WBO champion from Germany, and I can reveal we are also talking to Hernandez, the Cuban who has the IBF belt.

“We have seen the city of Liverpool get behind Tony and I am in talks about putting on a fight for him at Goodison Park. The question is whether we could get one of the world champions to fight over here.

“From that point of view, Hernandez seems more willing to travel, so we’ll wait and see how it pans out in the next few weeks.”

Cleverly, meanwhile, is understood to be focusing on a potential showdown with WBA light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer.

The duo have previous, Braehmer failing to make two fights with Cleverly who ultimately claimed his world title when it became vacant and the prospect of fighting a former world champion, in his native Germany, is likely to appeal to Braehmer.

He’s no stranger to Welsh opponents, beating Enzo Maccarinelli in April this year.
