GLAMORGAN coach Adrian Shaw is aware that his side are once again likely to find themselves bowling with short boundaries when they start their season at Somerset tomorrow.

Glam kick off the Friends Provident Trophy with a trip to Taunton to face a side tipped to be in the running to win the trophy.

And Shaw realises his attack, likely to include paceman Simon Jones, will face a tough test in their opening game of the season against a formidable home batting line-up.

He said: "They've got Cameron White, Justin Langer, Marcus Tresco-thick, Ian Blackwell - all world-class players and world-class strikers of the ball who on any given day can take an attack apart.

"We just hope that day isn't going to be this Sunday and that we perform well.

"I'm reasonably confident though I have a sneaky feeling we will be on the edge of the square. They normally put about a 50-yard boundary on one side as they know we have based a lot of our one-day cricket around two spinners.

"A lot of teams try and change our game plan and we are used to that now.

"We have just got to look after our side of things and get our game plan in order."

Last season's 50-over tournament was something of a damp squib with the two-division format hindered by the fact that only one side from each went through to a final.

But the ECB have done a bit of tinkering and it has all got the approval of the Glamorgan coach, who will be looking for a better show from his charges.

He said: "The competition has improved this year with semi-finals that will keep a lot more teams interested.

"It was a bit of a nonentity last year with it going straight to the finals.

"If you lost the first few games you were out of it and just had to go through the motions.

"I'd actually like quarter-finals as well, though I understand there are problems with the fixture list. We only won one game against Ireland last season so we will obviously be looking to better that.
