IT TOOK an own goal from Gareth McAuley on 75 minutes to seal Wales' place in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals. Here's how Chris Coleman's men rated in Paris.
Wayne Hennessey: The Crystal Palace goalkeeper was forced into several smart stops as Wales struggled in the first half and was always alert to danger. 8
Neil Taylor: Tried his luck with another shot after rare goal against Russia but struggled a little in defence as Northern Ireland bullied Wales early on. 6
Ben Davies: Another terrific display from the young Tottenham defender, making at least three crucial headers and always in the right place. 8 (Star man)
Ashley Williams: This was his sort of game and the captain produced a much better performance. Refused to leave the field when clearly injured at the death. 7
James Chester: Once again the West Brom centre-back was superb with excellent positional sense and composure. Superb tackle to rob Lafferty. 8
Chris Gunter: Vital header at the back post towards the end of the first half stopped a possible opener for Northern Ireland. Rarely a threat going forward. 7
Joe Ledley: A game too far in his recovery perhaps? The Palace midfielder put the effort in but looked sluggish and off the pace. Replaced by Jonny Williams. 5
Joe Allen: Couldn’t influence the game like he has done in previous games as Northern Ireland pressed and tackled hard, particularly in the first hour. 6
Aaron Ramsey: It wasn’t working for the Arsenal man for most of the afternoon and he was by no means alone. But kept plugging away and improved late on. 7
Gareth Bale: No time or space to produce the magic the nation expects and took some heavy challenges but created the winner with dangerous cross late on. 7
Sam Vokes: Retained his place up front after helping to dismantle Russia but he was isolated and ineffective here and fluffed his one glorious chance. 5
