MICHAEL Flynn has called on Newport County AFC fans to get Rodney Parade rocking as his side face a final day shootout for survival in League Two.

County were beaten 2-1 at Carlisle United on Saturday but remain two points clear of Hartlepool United after their relegation rivals lost 1-0 at fellow strugglers Cheltenham Town.

Cheltenham’s win means they are now safe and leaves Hartlepool and the Exiles in a two-way battle to beat the drop.

All matches kick off at 5.30pm next Saturday when Pools must take three points at home to promoted Doncaster Rovers and hope Flynn’s men fail to win as they host mid-table Notts County.

“It’s all to play for next week,” said the County caretaker manager, who now has six wins from 11 games in charge.

“We’re at home and we’ll sell the place out. We’ll have it rocking and the boys have got to rise to the occasion.”

He added: “The fixtures we’ve had – Portsmouth away, Plymouth away, Carlisle away, Luton and Blackpool at home – it’s been a real tough set of fixtures to finish on but the boys have been a credit.

“They’ve put in performances good enough to get us to the last game of the season with a chance of staying up.

“All it means is there’s one less game. It’s a shootout now, it’s sudden death.

“Let’s just make sure we go and win it and stay in the Football League.”

Mickey Demetriou headed County in front at Brunton Park but Flynn felt the match changed following injuries to Alex Samuel and Mark Randall and the hosts netted twice in three minutes after the break to keep their play-off hopes alive.

“We didn’t want to make those substitutions but we were forced into it. It was unfortunate,” he said.

“Mark had a bang in the ribs and he was struggling with his breathing.

“If you can’t breathe you can’t run around and we needed everyone to put a shift in because we knew they were going to come out fighting.

“It’s not looking good for Alex,” he added. “His hamstring is very sore.

“Mark will be alright for next week but if Alex is out it will give someone else a chance to come in and be a hero by keeping us in the League.”

One man who could be a hero is striker Lenell John-Lewis who came off the bench in Cumbria to make his first appearance of the season.

“I was really pleased to have him back,” said Flynn. “He forced my hand a little bit with his performances in training. He was on fire.

“I’m glad for him personally that he’s overcome his injury problems and proud of his performance after so long out.

“He said during the week he’s aiming to play the last game and score the winner and if he does I’ll bite his hand off.”
