NEWPORT County AFC caretaker manager Michael Flynn admits he will be keeping an eye on events at Hartlepool tomorrow.

The Exiles will definitely avoid relegation from League Two if they beat Notts County at Rodney Parade (kick-off 5.30pm).

But if they fail to win they will be reliant on title-chasing Doncaster Rovers earning at least a point at Hartlepool United, who are currently two points below Flynn’s men in the table.

And the County boss says he will be keeping tabs on events at Victoria Park, where the Sky TV cameras will be in attendance.

“I probably will because we’ll have to have a look at different permutations,” he said.

“We’ve got to see how it’s going there because it might influence what we need to do regarding substitutions.

“There will be someone keeping an eye on it but it won’t be me – I’ll be more worried about what we do.

“It might be a factor but I’m confident that we’ll get the win and that Doncaster will go on and win the league.”

The permutations for tomorrow mean that Pools must win and hope Flynn’s side fail to beat Notts County.

If Hartlepool lose or draw they are down, no matter what happens in Newport.

If both sides win, both draw or both lose then County will remain two points clear and stay up.

But if Hartlepool win and the Exiles lose then the North East club will survive with a one-point advantage in the final table.

And if Hartlepool win and it ends in a draw at Rodney Parade there will also be celebrations at Victoria Park as Pools will stay up on goal difference – the legacy of County’s 6-1 thumping at Plymouth Argyle on Easter Monday.

“If I’m not paying attention to what’s going on at Hartlepool, I’m sure the fans will let me know,” added Flynn.

“It will either be dead silent if they’re winning or it will be a carnival atmosphere if they’re losing.

“That might impact on the game and the substitutions I’m going to be making.

“If we’re chasing the game I might need to throw another striker on and if we’re winning, I might need an extra defender. We’ll see how the game is going.

“It would be the perfect scenario if we were 4-0 up and Hartlepool were 3-0 down, but we know football doesn’t work like that.

“You don’t always get what you want, but I’m sure the boys will finish the job because they’ve been excellent.”
