PADRAIG Amond put Newport County AFC ahead at Cheltenham Town but the hosts claimed a point thanks to Mo Eisa's equaliser 13 minutes from time. Here's what we learned...

1. Flynn’s men always bounce back

Michael Flynn has now been in charge for 37 matches in League Two and his side have still not lost two in a row.

Whenever they have lost a league match – 10 times – they have always picked up at least a point in the following game and this was a good response to the disappointing defeat at Wycombe Wanderers on Boxing Day.

2. Suspensions cost County

A point was a decent return for a squad ravaged by injuries, illness and suspensions but it could have been more.

Both sides had the chances to win the match but Flynn will rue the silly second yellow card that Joss Labadie picked up at Wycombe. The captain could made the difference in the heart of midfield.

3. Amond remains the best finisher in the squad

The manager made three changes and the trio that came into the starting XI all made a reasonable impact, none more so than goalscorer Padraig Amond.

The striker has had to be patient in recent weeks as Shawn McCoulsky has supplanted him in the front two and he grabbed his opportunity to impress with a superbly-taken goal – his first since the win at Forest Green Rovers on October 14.

4. Owen-Evans is back in the fold

Academy graduate Tom Owen-Evans was another one given a rare chance to impress thanks to illness and suspension in midfield.

The youngster tired towards the end but he was up for the battle, winning half a dozen free-kicks, and did enough to suggest that can play a part in the second half of the season.

5. The cavalry will arrive, after one more game

Joss Labadie returns from suspension for the New Year’s Day clash with Exeter City at Rodney Parade but Flynn is still without Mark O’Brien and the quick turnaround doesn’t give much time for those in the treatment room to get themselves fit and healthy.

Ideally the manager would want to shuffle his pack a little with two games in three days but he doesn’t have much scope for that and it’s a case of getting through this game before reinforcements can and will be brought in next week.
