FFOS Las has been sold to Arc, the group that owns Chepstow, it was announced at the weekend.

Arc already had a contract to manage some aspects of the Carmarthenshire course’s operations. Ffos Las have found it hard to get the fixtures they want. For example, they have only six flat race meetings a year.

The course’s creator Dai Walters said: "We've had it for ten years, but Arc is able to get better fixtures than we did because it can swap them around.

"We couldn't get the days and we had only 18 or 20 fixtures, and that was not really economical to keep all the staff there for one track.”

He wished Arc good luck.

“I'm very happy with the outcome and want them to be a success."

The Nikki Evans stable remains in good form, thanks to Maroc’s second place at Newbury on Friday on top of their two winners earlier in the week. The Racing Post commented that he looked well and “stuck on well after setting a decent clip.” Although the horse is still a maiden after 25 races, on the flat he’s placed more often than not and his turn may come soon.

Nikki is originally from Leominster, in Herefordshire.

“Both my parents trained and my father rode in races," she said.

"I rode winners too, before getting valuable experience working with Josh Gifford and John Edwards. I trained a few point-to-pointers to begin with, but one thing led to another, so that now I and my husband Paul have about a dozen horses to run on the flat as well as over jumps, with room for a few more.

"It’s a coincidence that we wound up in Pandy not far from David Evans; we are not related.”

Late Shipment is the best horse in the yard at the moment.

"The handicapper has done him no favours. He will probably go chasing some time in the season ahead. His owner, Mrs Gittings-Watts, is a loyal supporter of ours. She’s had many horses with us over the years."

Having a runner at Royal Ascot was one of the Evans family’s most memorable racing days. Nevertheless, she maintained: “It’s more satisfying having horses run well at top tracks like Newbury; we’ve had winners there.”

Getting the best out of modest racehorses is paramount.

“We’ve never paid more than 8,000 guineas for one.”

That means having a share in a horse can be very affordable, and enjoyable as long as their owners appreciate they’re not going to be Frankels.

Another small yard in a rich vein of form is that of Grace Harris. Mooroverthebridge was one of two winners on the same day for her a fortnight ago and this filly made it two in a row at Salisbury on Thursday, taking a hands and heels race for apprentices. She won’t pick up a penalty for that latest win if, as planned, she runs at Lingfield on Thursday.

Racing carries on at Ffos Las regardless of impending management changes. Saturday is Ladies Night, one of their biggest meetings of the year. The first of seven jump races is off at 6.05.

On Sunday afternoon there’s racing with a difference at Chepstow; there’s a meeting for Arabian horses, which is sponsored by the Royal Cavalry of Oman. They’re not quite as fast as thoroughbreds, but if anything they are even more handsome.

Entry is only £5, and under-16s go free.
