NEWPORT County AFC have confirmed that Wales international Andrew Crofts will captain the side for the 2018-2019 campaign.

Crofts, who joined County during the summer from Scunthorpe United, said: "I am massively grateful for captaincy role here at Newport County AFC and I am looking forward to the season ahead.

“I wasn’t that keen on dropping down a division but I wanted to play for a Welsh club and that made it hard to say no.

“As soon as I joined the club I could see and feel the energy. I’ve played with Michael Flynn and I know he’s a winner – so am I.

“We're going to take it game by game and keep our focus and make sure we do it right.

“We want to improve on last season’s league position. The goal is to aim as high as we can and hopefully clinch promotion."

South Wales Argus:

The Argus reported that Crofts was being considered for the captaincy earlier this month.

Exiles boss Michael Flynn said on July 5: "I haven’t made my decision yet but of course he’s a potential captain.

"He’s a leader on and off the pitch and he’s had a great career.

“He’s a fantastic professional so he ticks all the boxes but I honestly haven’t made my mind up yet.”

Flynn and Crofts have known each other since playing together at Gillingham between 2005 and 2007 and have remained close since then.

That relationship was a key factor in Crofts’ decision to move to Rodney Parade after being released by Scunthorpe.

“Croftsy is one of my best friends in football,” added Flynn. “We’ve always kept I contact. He’s a gentleman and he’s somebody I trust a lot. So signing him was really a no-brainer.

“He’s taken probably the lowest wage he’s been on since he started at Gillingham but he wanted it to happen.

“He could have hung on and hoped for a bit more money [elsewhere] but he’s shown the appetite that we want and that we need at this football club.”
