EBBW Vale want to show that they have got attacking panache to go with their defensive Steel when they entertain Aberavon in front of the BBC cameras tonight (kick-off 7.10pm).

The loss of the rights to the Guinness PRO14 means that Scrum V will now show the Principality Premiership to fill a gap in the TV schedule.

First up is a clash at Eugene Cross Park between the Steelmen and the Wizards, two teams that enjoyed victory on opening weekend and have ambitions of challenging at the head of the table rather than being drawn into a battle against the drop.

Ebbw signalled their intent with a 43-10 win against Llanelli at Parc y Scarlets and captain Ronny Kynes – who works as a bricklayer alongside teammate Cameron Regan and was joined on the building site on Tuesday by television reporter Phil Steele – wants to pick up where they left off.

“There is a bit of extra pressure with it being the first game on the BBC and we want to put on a good show and let people know what we are about,” said the flanker.

“But we can’t let the cameras distract us, it’s all about the rugby and it will be a tough game. Aberavon will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season so it will be a good indication of where we are.

“They are always strong up front and it will be a battle between two of the best scrums in the Premiership going at each other.”

Kynes scored two of Ebbw’s six tries in Llanelli and the influential back row forward was pleased that they showed a cutting edge.

“We know that our defence is good – we had the best defence in the league last year – but we have worked hard on our attack in pre-season,” said the 32-year-old.

“We scored six tries and left one or two out there while Llanelli’s only try was an interception when we probably would have scored another.

“The attack was a big plus but we are not getting ahead of ourselves and know that we have to keep improving against Aberavon.”
