ABERGAVENNY welterweight Kieran Gething has joined fellow Gwent fighter Sean McGoldrick in signing up with management company MTK Global, writes Andrew Penman.

Gething has won six of his eight fights as a professional and is targeting a big year after a ruthless stoppage of Jorge Moreno last time out.

The 24-year-old, who trains in Pontypool, will take on Mountain Ash's Tony Dixon for the Welsh welterweight title at the Newport Centre on October 27.

And Gething sees that as only the first step with his new management team.

“I’m really excited about signing with a massive organisation like MTK Global,” he said.

“I believe I can go all the way and I know they can get me the fights that will develop me and make sure I’m remembered.

“MTK Global puts on great promotions I’m looking forward to being a part of them. The deals with BoxNation and iFL give me an amazing platform.

“I really want to pick up my first title before the end of the year having had a few let-downs in my career regarding titles.

“Then I want to build on that and aim towards the Lonsdale belt next year.

“I know MTK Global has the resources and I just need those opportunities to show how great I am.”

Gething captained Wales as an amateur and fought alongside Olympian and Commonwealth lightweight champion Joe Cordina.

His professional career has been blighted by personal tragedy after his father Gary, himself a former boxer, took his own life in 2014.

But he is steadily rising through the paid ranks and MTK Global chief executive officer Sandra Vaughan believes he has a big future.

She said: “It’s with great excitement that we welcome Kieran to the team and we’re confident a big future lies ahead.

“Wales is a country with a huge boxing history and a huge boxing future and Kieran can play a significant role in that along with his new team-mates Liam Williams, Sean McGoldrick and Jacob Robinson.”
