NEWPORT County AFC boss Michael Flynn has spoken of his pleasure with the positivity around the club following an impressive start to the season in League Two.

September’s manager of the month has guided the Exiles to third place in the table after just two defeats in 13 outings.

Flynn’s men go to Crawley Town today (kick-off 3pm) fresh from last Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Stevenage, a result that was only secured deep into second-half stoppage time.

Another three points this afternoon could see County climb to the giddy heights of second behind leaders Lincoln City, further enhancing their chances of making a serious promotion push.

Off the pitch, Flynn attended a “very good” board meeting this week with management consultant Lennie Lawrence, and he was happy with what he saw.

“I’m just focusing on the things I can affect and that’s on the training pitch and on match days,” said Flynn.

“I’ll support everything I can for the club, I think I’ve proved that, and the more we’re all together the better.

“There’s a good feeling at the moment.

“I had a very good board meeting the other night, me and Lennie went, and it was nice to see the continuity of the board and their plans for wanting to support us.

“No promises were made. I’m not going to put them on the spot or anything, but it was good, it was a refreshing meeting.”

Flynn was also delighted with the way the fans didn’t give up on his side against Stevenage.

“It’s an old cliché and sounds a bit corny but they really are like the 12th man at Rodney Parade,” he added.

“You only have to look at the opposition managers and what they say about it.

“It’s crucial that we have a big crowd and they are cheering us on and supporting the team because it means a lot to the players, and nobody fancies coming when it’s hostile.

“It’s happened over the years with other clubs – Millwall was always a horrible place to go.

“We rely on the crowd to give us that extra boost we need because you only had to see them on Saturday, even after the game they were cheering the players on and getting things signed.

“I thought the noise they made was excellent.”

County supporters will no doubt make plenty of noise in West Sussex today, as Robbie Willmott, Tyreeq Bakinson, Andrew Crofts, Keanu Marsh-Brown and Mark O’Brien are all set to miss out through injury.

Crawley head coach Gabriele Cioffi is without centre-back Bondz N’Gala following his red card at the end of the Reds’ 3-1 defeat by Colchester United last weekend.

Club captain Jimmy Smith, who this week signed a one-year contract extension, is also out through injury.
