GOALKEEPER Joe Day admits Newport County AFC “capitulated” at Crawley Town on Saturday and the players are determined to put things right at Bury this evening.

Day kept his side in the game during the first half at the Checkatrade.com Stadium, but Crawley cruised to a 4-1 victory with three unanswered goals in the final half-hour after Jamille Matt’s equaliser.

The defeat ended County’s six-game unbeaten run following their 6-0 home defeat to Yeovil Town last month.

And Day says the Exiles will be aiming for a similar response to Saturday’s setback, starting at Gigg Lane tonight.

“It’s obviously not the result we wanted,” said the 28-year-old stopper.

“We were slightly fortunate to be [only] 1-0 down at half-time but we worked hard to get back into it and then we capitulated after that.

“It’s not good enough really and we need to sort it out.

“We’re all hurting and very disappointed but that’s football,” he added. “We can’t sulk or mope. We’ve got get over it quickly and get ourselves up for Bury and hopefully get a win there.”

Day is the only survivor from County’s last trip to Bury in November 2014, which resulted in a 3-1 win thanks to an Aaron O’Connor hat-trick, but he’s hoping for a repeat performance tonight.

Michael Flynn’s men have already won at Port Vale, Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers this season and drawn at Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers.

“We are good away from home,” said Day. “We are resilient and we don’t concede many, but we let ourselves down [on Saturday].

“We grind out some really good results and then we let ourselves down every so often and have a nightmare result.

“The only positive thing we can say is that we tend to bounce back from them and we have to do that again.

“We’ve had a couple of shockers this season and we’ve bounced back and hopefully we can get a result at Bury. We’ve got to get something out of this game.

“We’ll be a wounded animal going there and it’s up to us to put it right. We can’t let it happen again.”

Day says the players also want to give the travelling fans something to cheer.

“It’s a long trip [to Crawley] and a good number of our fans came,” he added.

“We let them down so if we do have some brave souls making the trip on Tuesday night hopefully we’ll send them home a bit happier.”

County were without seven players due to injury on Saturday and will also now have to do without defender Fraser Franks for three games after his late red card at Crawley.

“I won’t use that as an excuse because I think we’ve got a great squad,” said Day. “Hopefully we’ve got a few coming back.”

On Franks’ dismissal, he added: “He went in late, but I didn’t have a great view of it.

“I’m not sure it looked a red card from where I was but I think it was a bit needless, to be honest.”
