JOSH Sheehan is gunning for Wrexham after finally ending his eight-month goal drought with a sublime strike against Northampton Town.

The midfielder has endured a difficult start to the season but he set Newport County AFC on course for victory on Tuesday night as he netted for the first time since March.

Now he’s determined to kick on and hungry for more goals in Saturday’s FA Cup showdown at the Racecourse.

South Wales Argus:

“It’s been a frustrating start for me but it’s nice to finally be off the mark and hopefully I can keep that going now,” said the 23-year-old.

“It’s been very frustrating but it’s a team game, there’s 11 players only [being picked for each game].

“That’s football and I’m happy to take my chance and hopefully continue that with scoring more goals.”

And the former Swansea City man is relishing the all-Welsh clash with Wrexham, which is live on BT Sport (kick-off 8pm).

“It’s a big game, it’s on TV and it’s against Wrexham, a Welsh derby as well,” he said.

“It’s not often that Newport really play another Welsh club so maybe there is a bit more of an edge to it.

“The players won’t be affected by that but everyone wants to play in the game and everyone wants to make sure we win as well.”

Tomorrow’s encounter will be the first time the side have met since the 2013 National League play-off final.

Current boss Michael Flynn and defender David Pipe both played on that famous day at Wembley as goals from Christian Jolley and Aaron O’Connor sealed a 2-0 win for the Exiles.

“I remember it vaguely, I know that we won to get in the league,” said Sheehan.

“I’m sure Pipey will be mentioning it to us a few times in training.

“They will want a bit of revenge probably, but obviously they are not going to do that.”

Sheehan did not feature in last season’s ties against Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur so he’s determined to help County reach the third round and earn the chance to take on another one of the big boys.

“Every club wants that big Premier League tie, so hopefully we can get through Wrexham and we’ll see what we get after that,” he added.

“It’s going to be a really tough game, they’re doing really well but we are as well and hopefully we can get to the next round.

“We will go into the game feeling confident because of where we are in the league and a good performance [against Northampton].”
