TEENAGE forward Antoine Semenyo could be in line for a starting spot as Newport County AFC bid to hit the FA Cup jackpot with victory over Wrexham in tomorrow’s second-round replay at Rodney Parade.

Semenyo, who is reportedly being watched by Manchester United, inspired a County fightback at Swindon Town on Saturday after replacing David Pipe midway through the first half.

The 18-year-old, who is on loan from Bristol City, terrorised the Swindon defence and played a part in the build-up to Padraig Amond’s equaliser.

A late Kaiyne Woolery winner condemned the Exiles to a 2-1 defeat at the County Ground but Semenyo’s performance was a real positive.

And with a televised third-round clash with Leicester City and a guaranteed £150,000 on the table for the winner, Flynn feels he could make the difference against Wrexham tomorrow.

“I thought he was excellent when he came on,” said the manager.

“He’s only 18 but he took a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and I thought he was outstanding.

“He was a bright spark and I had to get him on because I had to give us something going forward.

“Antoine was a positive, so was Podge [Amond] getting his 11th of the season.

“I thought Benno [Scot Bennett] was brilliant when he came on as well. He was absolutely outstanding.

And it was nice to have Joss [Labadie] back [as a substitute]. You saw how influential he is when he came on.”

But Flynn knows his side must improve if they are to beat Wrexham tomorrow.

“It’s massive for both clubs and if we’re not at it we’ll lose, it’s as simple as that,” he said.

“We’re a good team and we’ve got some good players, and that’s why it’s more frustrating [when we under-perform].

“I wouldn’t mind if they were bad players – you’d expect them to miss the target and make mistakes at the back and give the opposition chances then.

“But they’re good players in a good team and that’s why it’s frustrating.

“I’m a realist, I’m not kidding myself,” he added. “I don’t get carried away when we’re flying high and I don’t get too down when we lose.

“I get frustrated and angry because I’m passionate and I want to do well for Newport and I want the players to get what they deserve out of the season.

“So, yeah, I get upset but I’m not a raving lunatic. I’ll go home and see the wife and the kids and start planning for Tuesday.”

Those plans are unlikely to include captain Andrew Crofts and Mark O’Brien, who were both forced off with hamstring problems on Saturday, but Matty Dolan should be in contention.

“It’s like a revolving door – one in and one out,” joked Flynn.

“Matty was fit [on Saturday] but he’d only had one day of training. He had a session [on Saturday] and he’ll have another one on Monday and he’ll be in contention for Tuesday.

“It’s a real tough month of fixtures and if we come out of that positively then it gives us a chance for the rest of the season.”
