PADRAIG Amond believes Newport County AFC should use some of their £315,000 FA Cup windfall to keep the current squad together.

Manager Michael Flynn has already revealed that he would like to bring in two or three new players in January.

And Amond, who is one of 13 players out of contract at the end of the season, would love to see new deals being offered to those who have helped County to sixth in League Two and the third round of the FA Cup.

Asked about a new contract, the striker said: “There’s a few of the other boys who probably want new contracts as well.”

Goalkeeper Joe Day, defenders David Pipe, Dan Butler, Mickey Demetriou, Mark O’Brien and Tyler Forbes, midfielders Joss Labadie, Andrew Crofts, Matty Dolan, Robbie Willmott and Josh Sheehan and striker Momodou Touray will also come to the end of their current deals next summer.

“There’s obviously money in the bank and I think it’s important that, if the club is to step forward in the right direction, [to keep the squad together],” added Amond.

“We’re doing really well this year and it would be a shame for the club to lose all those players.”

Amond will be 31 in April but he’s certain he still has plenty of miles left in the tank.

“I just love playing every game I can,” he said. “I never want to be rested because I’m really enjoying my football and really enjoying my time, so long may it continue.

“It’s a short career but I want to keep going as long as I can.

“People are starting to say I’m old, even though I’m only 30 and I can move round probably more than when I was younger.

“It’s brilliant and I’m just really happy to be playing.”

Amond is also full of praise for fellow front men Jamille Matt, Antoine Semenyo and Mark Harris.

“We’ve got four good strikers here – myself, Jamma, Antoine and Sparky,” he added.

“To be honest, Sparky is probably the most unlucky player in the squad.

“Before he got his concussion [playing for Wales under-21s] he was absolutely flying.

“But Jamma has come in and been excellent. He’s scored lots of goals for us and that’s what you want – healthy competition.

“Antoine is coming on and changing the game. He’s done really well and it’s hard to believe he’s only 18.

“We’ve got different options [up front] and we’ve got the likes of Robbie Willmott and Dan Butler putting crosses in that are a dream for strikers.”
