NEWPORT County AFC defender Mickey Demetriou is set to find out today if his remarkable run of 75 consecutive League Two appearances will continue at Lincoln City this weekend.

The 28-year-old has not missed a league match for the Exiles since the 1-1 draw with Luton Town in March 2017.

A fractured cheekbone picked up in last week’s FA Cup replay win over Wrexham meant he was not included in the matchday squad to face MK Dons on Saturday.

But he earned a reprieved when that match was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Rodney Parade.

Demetriou went for a scan on the injury yesterday and is due to learn whether or not he needs an operation when he returns to hospital today.

“From a selfish point of view I was happy to see the game called off, but it was a shame the boys couldn’t go out there and play after preparing all week,” said the centre-back.

“Next week is even bigger now because we didn’t play against MK Dons. I just have to work hard and hope I am fit by Saturday.

“I had a scan on Monday to see if I’ve got to have an operation and I’ve got another hospital visit on Tuesday. I will just have to see what the doctors have to say.

“I wanted to play against MK Dons, but I had to take medical advice not to do so because of the type of injury it is. They told me it could get a lot, lot worse if it got hit again.

“I think it was an elbow that caught me and, hopefully, he didn’t mean to do it. I hate missing football.”

Demetriou, who was signed as a free agent by Graham Westley in January 2017, has missed just four of the 84 league matches since making his debut.

“The frustrating thing is I don’t feel injured. I’m proud of my appearance record and I want to keep it going,” he added.

“We’ve got a big month to aim at and every game in December is against a team around us in the league.”

After this weekend’s trip to league leaders Lincoln, County host ninth-placed Forest Green Rovers on Boxing Day and Crawley Town, who are currently 16th, on December 30.

Michael Flynn’s men then travel to Stevenage on New Year’s Day before welcoming former Premier League champions Leicester City to Rodney Parade in the FA Cup on January 6.

“We were lucky enough to have a cup ran last year and now we are lucky enough to have it again this season after a big performance against Wrexham,” said Demetriou.

“It earned us a big tie for the club, which is the most important thing. It is going to generate some money for the club and, hopefully, we can do ourselves proud again.

“We had Harry Kane to deal with last year and it will be Jamie Vardy this time. Vardy is probably quicker than Kane, so that will be fun.

“But we’ve got some massive league games before that and we can’t start thinking about the FA Cup until after Stevenage.”
