GWENT'S Kieran Gething and Kody Davies are set to fight for Welsh titles in 2019 at shows in Merthyr Tydfil and Newport respectively.

Pontypool’s Gething will get a second shot at becoming a Welsh champion around three months after an unsuccessful tilt at the vacant welterweight crown.

The 24-year-old has been sparring with Lee Selby in preparation for his showdown with Cardiff’s Henry Janes at The Neon in Newport on Saturday, February 2.

The contest, for the vacant super-lightweight championship, sees Gething take a step down in weight.

And there is also a homecoming for Craig Woodruff, who made a successful comeback to the ring last month.

As for Pontllanfraith's Davies, 24, the super-middleweight crown will be up for grabs when he faces Morgan Jones, who used to be trained by St Joseph’s coach Tony Borg.

The clash, at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre on Saturday, March 9, gives both men their first shot at a belt in the professional ranks.

Davies is currently unbeaten in the paid code with an impressive record of eight straight wins in as many contests.

Jones, 28, has lost just once in 13 fights, that defeat coming at the Principality Stadium in March on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s victory over Joseph Parker.

Also appearing on the Merthyr show is Newport’s Dan Barton who takes on Port Talbot’s Geraint Goodridge.

Barton was in hospital this autumn with pneumonia and sepsis, a bout of ill health that denied him the chance to fight Goodridge for the Welsh middleweight strap.

Unbeaten St Joes lightweight Gavin Gwynne will bid for an 11th straight win, while Risca’s Jake Tinklin and Borg-trained Robbie Vernon look to build on debut victories in October.

Meanwhile, Abertillery MMA ace Jack Marshman and John Phillips will contest the first all-Welsh match in UFC history.

The so-called ‘Battle of Wales’ takes place at UFC London on Saturday, March 16.

It will be Marshman’s sixth fight in the UFC since signing two years ago, about the same time that a war of words began between the two middleweights.

Despite being born and bred in Swansea, Phillips (21-8) resides in Dublin, the home of former double UFC world champion Conor McGregor.

He made his debut in London last March but has lost his two UFC fights by rear-naked choke.

It has been a bumpy ride for both men since their UFC debuts and all is at stake in London.

Styles make fights and the explosive, knockout power of both men will make this historic match one not to be missed for fight fans.
