KIERAN Gething is the new Welsh super-lightweight champion after beating Henry Janes on points at The Neon in Newport tonight.

Victory over 35-year-old Janes gave Pontypool’s Gething his first title in the professional ranks following a failed bid to land the Welsh welterweight crown last October.

On that occasion, Tony Dixon got the better of him by just one point, but this time the decision went in Gething’s favour by a 99-92 scoreline.

And there was a degree of poignancy about Gething’s win against Cardiff veteran Janes as it came almost five years to the day since his dad Gary passed away.

The champion, 24, is now looking to fight again in the capital on St David’s Day when MTK Global, the company who manages Gething, host a show at the Vale Sports Arena.

Meanwhile, there was also a victory tonight for Newport’s very own Craig Woodruff, who outpointed Englishman Jordan Ellison in a six-round lightweight contest.

Fellow Welshmen Rhys Edwards, Angelo Dragone, Maredudd Thomas and Chris Jenkins were winners on the British Warriors Boxing Promotions bill too.
