NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn insists he’s not thinking about the League Two play-offs after Tuesday’s 1-0 home defeat to MK Dons.

County hit the woodwork four times at Rodney Parade and missed several other chances before substitute Chuks Aneke won it for the visitors two minutes from time.

The defeat saw them drop to 15th in the table, eight points below seventh-placed Forest Green Rovers with a game in hand.

“I’m not even thinking about the play-offs,” said Flynn.

“We’ve got to go on a run of games where we win four or five. This was a great opportunity to set up a good run.

“Three points would have put us in a great position. It’s frustrating. We can’t kill teams off.

“We created enough chances to win five games, but we didn’t win one.

“That’s why we are where we are. It’s why we’re a mid-table team.”

A win would have set up the Exiles perfectly for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Manchester City, but Flynn is trying to remain positive.

“It’s not all doom and gloom,” said the boss. “We were by far the best team and, on another night, we would have won comfortably. But sometimes it’s just not your night.

“The effort was fantastic and there were some outstanding bits of play.

“The quality, apart from the finishing, was excellent.

“Regan Poole dis well and the amount of crosses Robbie Willmott put in the box was superb.

“It would have been nice to finish them off. I would have taken one hitting someone on the ear and went in, or if one of them broke their nose head-butting it in.

“If we’d taken a quarter of chances we would have been out of sight.”

Joss Labadie and Mark O’Brien both missed the match with minor problems but should be OK to face City, as should new signing Harry McKirdy.

“Harry’s back training now and he could feature on Saturday, we’ll see,” said Flynn.

“There are no tough decisions. I know near enough what I’m doing [with the team].”
