Newport County head to Yeovil Town with revenge on their minds

County were humiliated by an incredible 6-0 home defeat to Yeovil Town in September, with Day at fault for a number of goals.

Today they head to Huish Park looking to avenge that hammering, boosting their flagging play-off hopes and adding to Yeovil’s relegation worries in the process.

“We were disappointed with the performance against Yeovil earlier in the season, nobody more than myself,” admitted Day.

“But that was then and this is a chance to put it right and claw three points off them.

“We know the situation they’re in. You fight for your life when you’re down there, but we’re fighting for something as well and we’ve got to fight even harder and try to win the game.

“You can’t go into a game seeking revenge, I don’t think,” he added.

“But we’ll definitely use the 6-0 as a kick up the backside and we’ll be desperate to get the three points.

“It’ll be mentioned before the game, I’m sure. But we’ve got to play it in the way we know we can win the game and not let the last result affect us mentally.

“We’ll use it in a positive way and look to get the result we need.

“They’re obviously fighting for survival and we’ve been in that position so we know what that’s like. But we’ll be wanting those three points just as much as them, if not more.”

Day is focused on achieving a top-seven place to cap what has been a fine season on a personal level.

“I’m very pleased to be named in the team of the season,” said the 28-year-old stopper.

“It’s a great achievement. There’s a lot of good goalkeepers in this league and to have been chosen in the team of the season is a very proud moment for me.

“On a personal level it’s been a good season for me, and as a club we’ve had a lot of success.

“We’ve got nine games left and I’m desperate to make the play-offs.

“We’ve got to take it one game at a time, get as many points as we can and see where it takes us.

“Inconsistency has haunted us a little bit – that’s been the story of our season with the away form.

“But we know what can happen with a few games left. We showed that in the Great Escape season and we won’t be giving up, that’s for sure.”

Day is one of 11 players out of contract this summer but he wants to focus on the task in hand before talking about his future.

“It’s one of those points of the season where there’s too much to play for to be worrying about that, I think,” he said.

“That’ll take care of itself in the summer so we’ll see when we get to the summer.”

Today sees the Exiles return to action after a two-week break.

"It's a helped us physically and mentally," said Day. "We’re ready to go again."
