Dragons lock Screech follows pal Hill's lead to become Principality Stadium hero

Screech powered over at the death to level the scores at 32-32 against the Scarlets at Judgement Day, an effort that was followed by Jason Tovey's nerveless conversion.

The Dragons hammered away in the 22 for 11 phases before the lock went over for his second try of the afternoon despite the best efforts of defenders Blade Thomson and David Bulbring.

Try telling the Rodney Parade faithful that it didn't quite match the remarkable passage of play that saw Hill barge over against England in the Six Nations.

On that occasion Wales hammered away for 35 phases before the Dragons captain cut a lovely line to smash through the tackles of prop Harry Williams and number eight Billy Vunipola.

Hill's effort clearly made an impression on Screech, his second-row partner when coming through the ranks at Cardiff Blues, Wales Under-20s and now the Dragons.

Reflecting on his exploits, the 26-year-old said: "I don't really score many tries but the first one I could see everyone folding open, there were just one or two players there so I just said to Rhodri (Williams, scrum-half) to give it to me and I fell over really!

"The second one was quite similar really, we went through a lot of phases to get there and I could see a lot of boys looking at the ruck so I just thought I'd get on the old Cory Hill line!"

The win ensured the Dragons finished what has been another disappointing season with a flourish, overturning a 17-6 half-time deficit to lead 27-17 and then responding again when the Scarlets regained their advantage.

The five-point haul meant that they climbed above Southern Kings at the bottom of Conference B of the Guinness PRO14.

Screech, who started 14 straight games after being recalled for the clash with Clermont Auvergne at the Stade Marcel Michelin in December, wants the Dragons to show more belief when they return in September.

"Ceri (Jones, caretaker head coach) said to go out there all guns blazing and give it everything that we've got. We did and pulled away to a 10-point lead," he said.

"We have got to have that belief all the time. We showed what we can do, we've got a good squad and have to believe.

"It's been a tough season but there is a lot of belief after our performances in derby games and to finish on a win is great for us, so hopefully we can kick on next season.

"It was a first win for us on Judgement Day and it's a great occasion, the best game of the year, so it was a good one to win."
