NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn has revealed that midfielder Joss Labadie could return to play some part in the play-off semi-finals, but he won’t be bringing in a back-up goalkeeper.

Labadie missed the last six games of the regular season with an ankle problem.

The former County captain sustained a nasty gash in the 0-0 draw with Swindon Town on April 9 and required 10 stitches in the wound.

He has not featured since but could be available for tomorrow night’s play-off semi-final first leg against Mansfield Town at Rodney Parade.

“Everyone is fit after Morecambe, and hopefully we should have one or two more [back] to fill the bench,” said Flynn, who has only been able to name six substitutes for the last three matches.

“It’s a clean bill of health as we speak. Joss might be available.”

South Wales Argus:

Second-choice goalkeeper Nick Townsend has been ruled out with a bicep injury since the end of March and County have gone into the last nine games without a back-up for number one Joe Day.

Flynn has explored the possibility of signing another stopper for the play-offs, but says he’s been told that he won’t be able to bring in anyone on an emergency loan.

“We did look at the ruling to get another one in, but as long as you’ve got one fit goalkeeper at the club you can’t get another one in,” said the Exiles boss.

“So I have tried, but there’s nothing I can do apart from pray that Joe stays fit.

“And if he does, I’m more than happy with one goalkeeper.”

Day’s saves proved vital at Morecambe on Saturday before Jamille Matt scored the late leveller to seal a top-seven finish.

“Joe’s been unbelievable for us all season,” said Matt. “On Saturday, he kept us in the game to be able to get the equaliser that was all-important in the end.

“And long may that continue. If he keeps us in games, he can help us to win games.”
